Certain things in life seem to be quite clear. We often count on things that we always thought were correct or done a certain way. It’s not until we look from a different angle that we may have a clearer picture.
This fits perfectly within the world of Workplace Health and Safety (WHS). One person’s point of view or interpretation could be opposite of the view of another person. Levels of experience, differences in levels of acceptable risk, and where they view WHS within their day to day activities may play a part. Common sense, therefore, cannot be a reliable control for hazards in the workplace or replacement for information, instruction, training, or supervision.
Hindsight can assist in understanding why things went the way they did, and imagination can assist in the understanding of what can possibly happen in the future. Stepping outside of the norm can also assist in seeing things differently.
Technology can also assist in acquiring a unique perspective – a ground site inspection can be quite different than an aerial inspection. Using technology in this space can not only help with seeing things from a different angle, but can also allow users to artificially position themselves in high risk areas without exposing them to harm. The benefit of this is that site inspections can be undertaken using drone technology whilst eliminating risk to personnel. An impressive control measure indeed.
