Featured in the Newcastle Herald Following Our 2026 Hunter Safety Awards Win
Following our recent Hunter Safety Awards win, Red Insight was featured in the Newcastle Herald discussing what we believe is one of the biggest challenges facing workplace health and safety today.
The article explores the gap between documented work and real work, and why even the most comprehensive WHS systems can struggle if they are not designed around how work is actually performed.
While we were honoured to be recognised as the 2026 Hunter Safety Awards Winner for Best WHS Management System (SME), the conversation that followed is one we believe is equally important.
Because effective workplace safety is about more than documentation. It is about creating systems that people can understand, maintain and apply when work becomes challenging.
If It Doesn’t Work Onsite, It Doesn’t Work
We’ve worked with businesses across construction, manufacturing, infrastructure, transport, maintenance and high-risk industries for more than a decade.
One lesson has remained remarkably consistent.
The biggest safety challenges are rarely caused by a lack of documentation.
More often, they occur when systems become disconnected from how work is actually performed.
Workplaces operate in dynamic environments. Conditions change. Deadlines shift. Crews overlap. Priorities compete. People make decisions under pressure while balancing safety, productivity and operational demands.
A safety system that only works under ideal conditions is not a reliable system.
That’s why our approach has evolved significantly over the years. Rather than focusing on creating larger systems, our focus has shifted towards building systems that are clear, practical and realistic to implement in the field.
As Red Insight Director Monica Toews Brown explains:
“We still see businesses handed systems that look impressive during audits but become very difficult to realistically implement at the workfront.
In many cases, the system was built around compliance first, rather than around how work is actually performed in the field.”
The goal has never been to create more paperwork.
The goal is to create systems that people can understand, maintain and apply under real operational conditions.
Recognition Built on Continuous Improvement
Like many businesses, we have learned valuable lessons through experience.
Feedback from clients, supervisors, managers and frontline workers has continually shaped the way we develop WHS systems. That feedback has helped us simplify processes, improve usability and focus on what genuinely supports safer outcomes.
Our philosophy remains simple:
If workers need to fight the system just to get the job done, something has already gone wrong in the way the system was designed.
This practical approach has contributed to ongoing recognition across the Hunter region, with both Red Insight team members and clients receiving recognition in categories including WHS Champion of the Year, Young WHS Leader, Best WHS Improvement and Best WHS Management System.

Following the awards, Red Insight was featured in the Newcastle Herald’s Hunter Safety Awards special feature, discussing one of the most significant challenges facing workplace safety today: the gap between documented work and real work.
The article highlighted the importance of building systems that support operational decision-making rather than competing against it, while reinforcing the belief that effective safety systems must remain practical under real-world conditions.

Looking Ahead
While we are proud to be recognised as the 2026 Hunter Safety Awards Winner for Best WHS Management System (SME), the real measure of success has never been the awards.
It is seeing safety systems being used confidently in the field, supporting better decisions, stronger leadership and safer outcomes for workers.
That remains our focus.
We are grateful to our clients, team and industry partners for being part of the journey and look forward to continuing to raise the standard of practical workplace health and safety across the Hunter and beyond.
